Tonggu County
The copper drum has "three wonders".
- Geographic wonder -
The name of the copper drum has its reasons. When we mention the copper drum, we think of the musical instrument used by ethnic minorities for rituals - the copper drum.
In fact, this copper drum is not the same as that copper drum; it is neither a place where ethnic minorities gather nor an instrument of ethnic minorities. It does not produce copper nor manufacture it. But why is it called a copper drum? There is a reason for its name.
According to the "Copper Drum County Chronicle": to the east of the county seat, there is a giant stone, colored like copper and shaped like a drum, which makes a sound when struck, named "Copper Drum Stone". Thus, Copper Drum County got its name. The county name 'Copper Drum' carries deep meaning. Copper symbolizes wealth among metals, and drum is the foremost among musical instruments, symbolizing wealth and progress.
- Historical wonder -
As early as over 4500 years ago, there were human activities related to the copper drum. Starting from the Tang and Song dynasties, due to wars in the north, a large number of refugees migrated here, especially during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties when many Hakka people moved in from western Fujian, northern Guangdong, and southern Jiangxi, with numbers exceeding ten thousand.
However, Copper Drum is also young. It was only established as a county in 1913, making its history just 110 years long. For a long time after its establishment, there was only one street and one bridge in the county seat, with a popular saying: "Little Copper Drum County, three tofu shops; you can hear the sound of boards being struck in the city."
A century of vicissitudes and great historical changes. Today’s Copper Drum County seat is filled with high-rise buildings, and the scale of the county seat continues to expand; there are already ten bridges.
In February 2016, Mao Zedong's dangerous site and the Copper Drum Memorial Hall for the Autumn Harvest Uprising successfully became a national 4A-level tourist attraction - the memorial site of the Autumn Harvest Uprising.
- Geomorphological wonder -
Copper Drum belongs to Danxia landform, forming natural wonders such as Wanhutiao Tian, Seven Gates, Tianzhufeng, Badazhai, and Spring of Young Girls. Moreover, it is truly amazing that the map of Copper Drum resembles that of our great motherland and looks like a rooster.
The mountains of Copper Drum have various shapes; the most distinctive is 'Shijian Tianzhu Badazhai'. Shijian Stone, also known as Copper Drum Stone, is shaped like a drum and stands majestically.
Tianzhufeng is located in Jiulong Lake within Copper Drum's territory upstream of Xiuhua River. It resembles a giant conch shell soaring into the clouds; one peak competes for beauty with another and has been praised as 'the beautiful peak of Xiujang'. Standing at the peak and looking around truly makes one feel 'I will stand on top of the world and see all other mountains as small', leaving one in awe.
Seven Gates (from first gate to seventh gate are: Motian Ridge, Beacon Tower, Double Pillar Peak, Drill Ground, Command Platform, Front Zhai, Wind Sail Stone);
Badazhai is hidden in a place called Lingyun Mountain Danxia group in Copper Drum. It is famous for being home to peasant uprising armies that rose up during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. They are called Xianyang Zhai, Yangjia Zhai (Weijia Zhai), Hougu Zhai, Balanzhai, Shuikeng Zhai, Pingfeng Zhai, Tuopan Zhai, and Zaogao Zhai.
When you walk into Badazhai, you can vaguely see narrow passes, secret fortresses, wells, zhai walls, altars for sacrifices, stone gates of zhai houses, and inscriptions by famous people... Under the welcoming pine tree on top of the rock and amidst evening glow by the rocks, you will read a segment of history that has been sealed away.
In addition to this, you can also enjoy 'the beautiful scenery of Weishan', 'Wanhutiao Tian's scenic spots', 'visiting immortals at Sun Ridge', 'meditating at Dalian Mountain', 'praying at Moon-shaped Bay'. The Qixing Ridge Ski Resort and Jianwei Gorge Forest Adventure Drift at Duhua Mountain Scenic Area have already become an ocean of fun for tourists.
In December 2016, Duhua Mountain Scenic Area successfully became a national 3A-level tourist attraction.
Copper Drum has "three treasures".
When you come to Copper Drum, if you don't eat Bao Yuan (a local dish), drink Cheng Jiu (a local wine), or soak in hot springs, it would be considered a wasted trip.
- Bao Yuan -
"Bao Yuan" is a unique food of Hakka people and also a delicacy for entertaining guests. "Bao" means "certain", while "Yuan" means "reunion or completeness".
Its preparation is similar to dumplings but requires careful selection of fillings made from pork, winter bamboo shoots, mushrooms, chicken meat, lotus seeds along with various seasonings. The outer skin is made from peeled taro mixed with potato starch to create elasticity.
"Bao Yuan" can be shaped freely into round shapes, half-moon shapes, triangular shapes or even various animal shapes. After being steamed over high heat until cooked through, it becomes fragrant and delicious with a sweet taste that is rich yet soft without being sticky; it glistens and has a chewy texture that makes it unforgettable.
- Cheng Jiu -
"Cheng Jiu" is glutinous rice wine brewed using traditional methods by farmers in Copper Drum.
The method involves steaming glutinous rice until cooked through then soaking it in water before adding wine yeast into jars. After half a month mixing up the wine dregs inside jars and adding warm water. A week later another batch of glutinous rice is steamed again; after cooling down it’s made into balls with wine yeast placed inside before being put back into original brewing jars for further fermentation using the same method for two to three times. When served it should be filtered to remove dregs.
"Cheng Jiu" from Copper Drum has clear color and rich aroma; it enters smoothly with lasting strength. Guests always praise it after drinking.
- Hot Springs -
"Hot Springs" are family treasures of Copper Drum. There are two rich geothermal water resources - hot springs: Yanming Hot Spring located in Fengwu Village of Hot Spring Town (1.5 kilometers from county seat); Tangli Hot Spring located in Aikou Village of Datun Town (38 kilometers from county seat).
The two hot springs in Copper Drum can supply over 5000 tons of geothermal water daily at temperatures between 66-72°C with excellent water quality rich in sulfur, sodium, calcium, potassium iron carbonate and various trace elements; they flow passionately without ceasing and are an endless gift from Mother Earth to the people of Copper Drum. Bathing in these springs has good effects on health care and treatment for skin diseases.
In December 2016, Tangli Cultural Tourism Resort successfully became a national 4A-level tourist attraction.
In 2017, the scenic area was rated as a 'provincial tourist resort' by the Jiangxi Provincial Scenic Area Evaluation Committee.
In 2020, it was selected as a 'Demonstration Case of Development in China's Vacation and Leisure Tourism' by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Su Shi traveled to Tonggu, leaving behind the Su Alley; Li Daluan fought at Tonggu, showcasing the might of the Eight Great Mountain Villages; Deng Zilong conquered Tonggu, leaving inscriptions on the Sword Testing Stone; Mao Zedong visited Tonggu, experiencing adventures and passing down great stories; Hu Yaobang passed through Tonggu, with hot springs and delicious food gaining fame...
